Le «large» n'est en fait qu'une zone maritime bien dégagée des dangers de la terre. Le «large» peut très bien être encore en vue de celle-ci, tandis que le «grand large» est plutôt la haute mer, hors de vue de toutes côtes, c'est-à-dire l'ensemble des océans au-delà du «large». Pour la météo marine le «grand large» débute à environ 200 milles marins de toutes côtes.
