L'Université du Connecticut, en collaboration avec l'Université Yale, aux États-Unis, a conçu un moteur thermique osmotique utilisant le mélange H2O-NH3-CO2 en circuit fermé. Employé d'abord pour dessaler l'eau à partir de rejets thermiques, ce procédé, appelé Engineered OsmosisTM, a été adapté à la production d'énergie.
