In 1995 an Ottawa-based research team, the Ottawa Stroke Consortium for Applied Research (OSCAR), was created to investigate cellular mechanisms responsible for the death of neurons following stroke. OSCAR was awarded a major grant from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO) to carry out this research. The $826,000 award was for two years. At that time, this was the largest single stroke grant ever awarded by the HSF0.
