Pour un auditeur, fait d'exiger un niveau excessif d'assurance que les états financiers ou autres informations sur lesquels porte l'audit ne comportent pas d'inexactitudes ou anomalies importantes.

Si le professionnel a établi à un niveau très élevé l'assurance qu'il entend obtenir au moyen des tests des contrôles et que, malgré la fiabilité des systèmes de contrôle interne révélée par ces tests, il fixe à un niveau élevé l'assurance qu'il entend obtenir au moyen des tests de corroboration ou de validation (ou contrôles substantifs), il en résulte dans la plupart des cas un surcroît inutile de travail.
