Tall and persistent overshooting tops are frequently observed with strong or severe thunderstorms in which there is a nearly continuous stream of buoyant updrafts.

Le cumulonimbus [...] Son sommet s'étale le plus souvent en forme d'enclume, de panache ou de chevelure désordonnée et sa base, très sombre, s'accompagne fréquemment de nuages bas déchiquetés, soudés ou non avec elle; dans certains cas, des sommets protubérants en forme de dômes surmontent l'enclume, révélant un phénomène d'«overshoot», c'est-à-dire de dépassement de la tropopause.
