Dans les machines dites de houssage, l'on peut partir d'une housse de film pré-confectionnée que la machine vient poser "en parachute" sur la palette. Mais l'on part le plus souvent d'une gaine à soufflets, d'épaisseur comprise entre 50 et 150 microns. La gaine est posée par descente verticale après avoir été ouverte par un séparateur situé en haut de la machine.

housse : Enveloppe, généralement en matière plastique, destinée à recouvrir, protéger et maintenir en place les charges logées sur palette.
