[Permanent dyes] are the most commonly used hair colorings because they give the most natural-looking, fast-holding colors. Permanent dyes are the so-called "para" dyes because they're based on paraphenylenediamine or paratoluyenediamine. That simply means that they are based on chemicals similar to those derived from coal tar.

[La teinture permanente] est, de tous les colorants pour cheveux, la plus populaire parce que ses couleurs sont fort résistantes et semblent naturelles. Classifiées comme teintures synthétiques, les «permanentes» portent aussi le nom de «para-teinture» parce qu'elles sont à base de phénylènediamine (ou paratolyénédiamine), c'est-à-dire que leurs ingrédients chimiques ressemblent aux dérivés de la distillation des goudrons de houille.
