PHASE MODULATION [2 records]

Record 1 - external organization data 2009-07-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Compartment - ISO/IEC JTC 1 Information Technology Vocabulary
Universal entry(ies)
06.01.23 (19762)
ISO/IEC standard entry number
DEF

modulation in which data is contained in the changes in the phase of the carrier and in which the instantaneous phase deviation varies in accordance with a given function, generally linear, of the instantaneous value of the modulating signal [IEC 60050-702, 702-06-36]

OBS

phase modulation; PM: term, abbreviation and definition standardized by ISO/IEC [ISO/IEC 19762-4:2008].

English

Subject field(s)
  • Television (Radioelectricity)
  • Telephony and Microwave Technology
  • Radiotelephony
DEF

Angle modulation, in which the instantaneous phase angle of a sine-wave carrier is caused to depart from the carrier angle by an amount proportional to the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating wave.

OBS

PM is similar to FM, in fact, crystal-controlled FM transmitters use a PM signal initially and then transform it into FM before it reaches the antenna.

OBS

PM is used essentially for telephony (analog signals). It bears some resemblance with phase shift keying (PSK) which is used for telegraphy or data (digital signals).

OBS

Term standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Télévision (Radioélectricité)
  • Téléphonie et techniques hyperfréquences
  • Radiotéléphonie
DEF
