The two minute satellites of Mars, Deimos and Phobos, were discovered by Hall in 1877. Deimos revolves around Mars at a mean distance of 23,000 km with a sidereal period of 1.26 days. The corresponding values for Phobos are 9000 km and 0.0627 day. (...) The masses of the satellites are unknown, but must be very small.

Les deux satellites de Mars, Phobos et Deimos, ont été découverts par l'astronome américain Asaph Hall en 1877. Ils tournent tout près de la planète et sont très faibles (...) et donc malaisés pour l'observation. Phobos se trouve à 2,77 rayons de son centre; (...) Il en résulte que Phobos se lève à l'Ouest bien que le mouvement de sa révolution soit direct (...) Phobos a environ 22 à 25 km de diamètre.
