Les grandes modifications apportées par le passage en supercritique sont dues essentiellement à l'augmentation de la pression et de la température de la vapeur surchauffée. Elles consistent principalement en : la disparition de la vaporisation. Ceci implique une modification de la chaudière, qui ne contient plus de ballon. Ici le fluide de travail passe de l'état liquide à l'état gazeux à pression constante sans changement de phase dans les tubes tapissant la paroi de la chaudière.
