Suivi d'un complément de personne, «appréhender» est souvent employé en matière pénale comme synonyme d'«arrêter» (voir le cas de la personne appréhendée sans mandat au paragraphe 25(4) du «Code criminel». La loi canadienne dit «arrêter». Toutefois, «appréhender» met l'accent sur le fait de se saisir d'une personne, que celle-ci ait ou non commis une infraction, alors qu'«arrêter» insiste sur le fait de mettre une personne en état d'arrestation parce qu'elle a commis une infraction. On relève l'emploi d'«appréhender» dans les lois concernant la protection de l'enfance ou de personnes souffrant d'une maladie mentale. Les agents de la paix se voient conférer le pouvoir de les «appréhender» dans le cas où la protection de ces personnes le justifie, sans qu'elles aient nécessairement commis une infraction. 5, record 1, French, - appr%C3%A9hender
