Le compteur de points se compose d'une surplatine spéciale qui se fixe sur la platine d'un microscope polarisant ordinaire, et est relié par un câble électrique à un tabulateur. Chaque touche de ce dernier comporte un totalisateur automatique et doit être affectée par l'opérateur à l'un des constituants de la lame mince examinée. L'opérateur identifie le minéral placé sous la croisée des fils du réticule et appuie sur la touche correspondante.
