For example, to assess the influence of water hardness on uranium toxicity, the merits of using a fixed Ca:Mg (4:1) ratio to account for potential differences in the ability of Ca and Mg to compete for binding sites and decrease uranium toxicity as well as the use of either CaCl2 and MgCl2, CaSO4 or CaCO3 to adjust water hardness and their potential effect on uranium toxicity must be taken into consideration.
