A test used to determine strength and deformation characteristics of soils and rocks by inserting a probe into a borehole to the required depth and expanding it laterally, the required information being obtained from the applied pressures and resulting deformations.

L'essai pressiométrique consiste à effectuer une mise en charge latérale du terrain grâce à une sonde [...] descendue dans un avant-trou sensiblement de même diamètre, parfaitement réalisé, car il ne doit pas modifier les caractéristiques du sol. Cette sonde est dilatable radialement par application d'une pression interne croissante. On détermine les déformations correspondantes en mesurant la variation de volume de la cellule centrale.
