PROMINENCE [2 records]

Record 1 2017-07-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • The Sun (Astronomy)
CONT

Think of the Sun as a highly magnetic ball of gas. Following along magnetic field lines, giant loops of plasma can form that extend far outward into space from the Sun's glowing "surface," its photosphere. These loops of plasma are solar prominences, and they can measure many times larger than Earth's diameter.

DEF

Record 2 1990-12-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astrophysics and Cosmography
CONT

Most prominences are of the active type; they originate high above the chromosphere and pour their streamers down into it. Quiescent prominences are the least active and have the longest lives; their most common form is the "haystack". Eruptive prominences are among the rarer types. These rise from material above the chromosphere, attaining high speeds and great altitudes before they vanish.

CONT

Bright rose-coloured prominences were sometimes seen extending above the edge of the moon's disk and into the corona.

Domaine(s)
  • Astrophysique et cosmographie
DEF
