Le terme psittacisme a pour origine latine psittacus, qui signifie perroquet. Il est employé pour qualifier la répétition mécanique d'expressions, phrases ou formules par un sujet, qui ne les comprend pas nécessairement. En psychopathologie, le psittacisme se retrouve souvent chez des individus déficients intellectuels, qui répètent des phrases sans les comprendre ni chercher à les comprendre.
