L'autorégulation de l'arc s'obtient grâce à l'emploi d'un courant continu à caractéristique plate très légèrement descendante. La fusion du fil électrode sous courant de 80 à 1000 A/mm² est rapide. Le procédé est utilisable au-dessus de 3 mm d'épaisseur et on ne peut souder qu'à plat, sauf les alliages légers soudables en toutes positions. On dit qu'on soude en régime surcritique.
