L'autorégulation de l'arc s'obtient grâce à l'emploi d'un courant continu à caractéristique plate très légèrement descendante. La fusion du fil électrode sous courant de 80 à 1000 A/mm² est rapide. Le procédé est utilisable au-dessus de 3 mm d'épaisseur et on ne peut souder qu'à plat, sauf les alliages légers soudables en toutes positions. On dit qu'on soude en régime surcritique. Pour souder sur pièces minces, en régime sous-critique, on a recours à un courant pulsé (MIG pulsé) qui permet alors de souder tous les métaux en toutes positions.
