A wild ass (Equus quagga) of southern Africa related to the zebras but having its upper parts stripes reddish brown, the posterior part plain grayish brown, and the belly and legs whitish, the ears are smaller and the tail more heavily haired than most asses or zebras.

Zèbre d'Afrique australe, aujourd'hui disparu, à la robe marquée d'un petit nombre de rayures sur la tête, le cou, et le garrot. (Nom scientifique. Equus quagga; famille des équidés).

CONT

Le Couagga était un zèbre de petite taille ressemblant beaucoup au cheval. Sa robe brun clair était rayée de bandes très atténuées s'amenuisant de l'avant vers l'arrière, où elles disparaissaient complètement. L'espèce qui vivait en Afrique du Sud, fût exterminée à l'état sauvage avant 1860, et le dernier spécimen en captivité mourut au zoo d'Amsterdam en 1883.
