Iron metals, alloys, and steels ... the OBM/Q-BOP, LWS, and SIP processes have been developed which use bottom blowing of oxygen and a shielding hydrocarbon through tuyeres in the bottom of the converter vessel. ... The OBM process was initially developed in Germany. The designation Q-BOP, introduced in the United States after further development work, is intended to emphasize the advantages of the new process compared with the Basic Oxygen Process (BOP). The letter, Q, stands for "quiet, quick, quality".

Historique du procédé OBM/Q-BOP. Vers 1965, deux chercheurs de la Canadian Liquid Air [...[ essayèrent, dans une petite poche de 100 kg de métal liquide, de souffler à pression normale au moyen d'un injecteur constitué de deux tubes concentriques, le tube central insufflant l'oxygène d'affinage [...] Les premiers résultats [...] intéressèrent la Maximillians-hutte (ou Maxhutte), en République fédérale d'Allemagne, où fut alors mis au point [...] le procédé OBM (Oxygen-Boden-Maxhutte) [...] En 1971, l'US. Steel Corporation acheta la licence du procédé OBM et lui donna le nom de Q-BOP (Q pour Quiet-Quick ou Quality et BOP pour Basic Oxygen Process.
