Le taux d'endettement (...) fournit des indications sur : la capacité de l'entreprise à résister aux aléas et chocs exogènes qui provoquent des pertes; son degré de dépendance à l'égard des prêteurs de fonds (...). En effet : le numérateur inclut l'ensemble des capitaux empruntés (dettes financières auprès du groupe et des associés, endettement sous toutes ses formes y compris crédits bancaires courants), le dénominateur comprend le capital de l'entreprise et son autofinancement cumulé (fonds propres + fonds d'amortissements et de provisions).
