Neurotransmitter "Recapture". Neurotransmitter molecules released from presynaptic neuronal stores diffuse across the synapse to exert their action via receptors on post-synaptic neurons. Action of the transmitter is terminated by Na+-coupled uptake of the transmitter into neuronal and glial cells adjacent to the synapse.

La NA (noradrénaline) et la DA (dopamine) sont synthétisées en présynaptique à partir de la phénylalanine et de la tyrosine; l'enzyme clef de la régulation de cette synthèse est latyrosine-hydroxylase. La 5HT est synthétisée à partir du tryptophane. Ces amines sont ensuite acheminées vers l'extrémité axonale où elles sont stockées dans des vésicules. Elles sont libérées sous l'effet de l'influx nerveux (exocytosecalcium-dépendante) dans l'espace synaptique. Des mécanismes d'élimination surviennent immédiatement après cette libération : la recapture et le catabolisme enzymatique.
