Respiratory distress. Symptoms and signs. Term baby; normal weight. Extreme tachypnea without gross retraction and expiratory grunting. Harsh loud breath sounds, considerable cardiac enlargement. Progressive hepatomegaly, edema, and cyanosis.

On englobe sous le terme de détresse respiratoire toutes les manifestations en rapport avec une perturbation importante des échanges gazeux au niveau pulmonaire, quelle qu'en soit l'origine. Trois ordres de signes sont à rechercher : la cyanose, les signes respiratoires de lutte, fréquence et rythme respiratoire. Une accélération de cette fréquence (tachypnée) s'observe dans toutes les détresses respiratoires.
