The typical icon is a small tempera painting on a wooden panel, sometimes embellished with an elaborate repoussé cover of silver or other metal, cut out to reveal the central part of the picture.

From an early date many Russian icons were covered with embossed silver that was cut out to show the faces and hands underneath.

Un élément important, extérieur à la peinture, intervient dans la valeur de l'icône : c'est la «rizza», chape de métal, en or, en argent ou en cuivre orné d'émaux et de pierres dures, de perles ou de gemmes - plaque utilement posée à la fin du XVIIIe et tout au long du XIXe siècle dans le but de protéger la peinture du «baiser de paix» et de l'haleine des fidèles, et qui ne laisse apparaître que les parties essentielles de l'image, le visage, les mains.
