La théorie des rôles sociaux, que l'on qualifie parfois de point de rencontre entre la sociologie et la psychologie, est d'une grande importance à ces deux domaines de recherche, mais peu de chercheurs ont réussi à y trouver des applications pratiques. Les rôles envahissent tous les aspects de la vie alors qu'une personne va d'un rôle à l'autre, comblant souvent plusieurs rôles à la fois. Ainsi, en un seul jour, une personne peut assumer les rôles de client, enseignant, patient, électeur, travailleur, épouse ou époux, mère ou père, filles ou fils, sœur ou frère, ami, voisin, etc. (Wolfensberger, 1991, p. 30).
