The Institute was founded in July 1930 on the basis of the faculty of geophysics and the hydrology department of the geological faculty of Moscow University. In 1944, the Institute moved to Leningrad [now called Saint Petersburg] and was called the Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute. In 1992, the Institute acquired the status of a state educational institution and assumed its present name.
