A "sacrifice" is a play in which the batter is out but not charged with an official appearance at bat because he had succeeded in putting a teammate further on the bases at the expense of his turn at bat. There are two types of "sacrifice": the "sacrifice hit" or "sacrifice bunt" in which the ball touches the ground before being caught, and the "sacrifice fly", an intended fly batted inside the infield.

L'avarie-dommage, que la tradition britannique appelle «sacrifice» (et plus particulièrement «jettison» s'il s'agit effectivement d'un jet de marchandises par-dessus bord) consiste, comme son nom l'indique, dans le sacrifice matériel fait volontairement d'un bien donné, notamment d'une marchandise.

Au cours d'une expédition maritime, trois types d'intérêts sont «en risque» : le navire, la cargaison et le fret. Leur sacrifice [...] constitue une «avarie-dommage». Les dépenses extraordinaires exposées aux mêmes conditions donnent également lieu à contribution : on parle à leur propos d'avaries-frais. (Rémond-Gouilloud, Dr. mar., 2ed., Pedone, p. 432).
