Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
  • Remote Sensing
DEF

A scanning radiometer that measures microwave radiation in five wavelength bands and 10 channels to determine the wind, sea surface temperature and roughness, cloud water content, precipitation, snow cover and sea ice.

CONT

The scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR) is an imaging 5-frequency radiometer ... It measures dual-polarized microwave radiances from the earth's atmosphere and surface, primarily for the purpose of deriving global and nearly all-weather measurements of sea surface temperature, wind speed, and atmospheric liquid water and water vapor.

OBS

This radiometer flew on Seasat (launched in June 1978) and Nimbus-7 (launched in October 1978).
