La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, recomienda la denominación "espacio Schengen" (o "espacio de Schengen"), con e minúscula en "espacio" y "Schengen" sin comillas, como grafía adecuada para referirse a la Europa sin fronteras internas. Dado que "espacio (de) Schengen" es una denominación meramente descriptiva, y no un nombre propio oficial, lo adecuado es escribir "espacio" con minúscula.
