The Provincial Trail Task Force recommends that Sentier NB Trail be a shared use, all season recreational trail, which will connect communities much the same as railways did in the past. The trail will be 3.5 meters in width and approximately 2,000 kilometres in length. The trail would be designed to accommodate walkers, hikers, joggers, bicyclists, equestrians, cross-country skiers, and snowmobilers. In addition, the trail will form part of Trans Canada Trail and connect to the International Appalachian Trail.

Le Groupe de travail sur le sentier provincial recommande que Sentier NB Trail soit un sentier récréationnel toutes saisons à usages partagés. Le sentier reliera les localités, un peu comme l'ont fait les voies ferrées dans le passé. Le sentier mesurera 3,5 m de largeur sur quelque 2 000 km. Il sera destiné aux marcheurs, aux excursionnistes, [...] aux cyclistes, aux cavaliers, aux skieurs de fond et aux motoneigistes. De plus, il fera partie du Sentier transcanadien et sera relié au Sentier international des Appalaches.
