L'assèchement des sols argileux provoque une contraction des agrégats naturels (réduction de leur volume) ainsi que des changements dans la distribution et la grandeur des vides (pores). Les fentes de retrait sont surtout présentes aux endroits où la structure du sol a été modifiée par des pratiques comme le labour, et plusieurs s'étirent jusque dans le sous-sol.
