Le massif est havé ou entaillé par-dessous, au moyen d'une série de galeries [...] creusées jusqu'aux limites du gisement. À l'une des extrémités du massif, ces galeries s'élargissent. On fore alors des trous dans les piliers, entre les galeries ainsi que dans le toit. L'explosion des trous provoque un commencement d'effondrement. Afin d'en limiter le volume et de faciliter ainsi l'affaissement du massif, on borne celui-ci à ses côtés et à ses extrémités, par des chantiers à retrait («shrinkage stopes»), mis en exploitation avant d'exécuter le havage sous le massif. Cette méthode convient à l'exploitation du minerai de dureté moyenne, offrant peu ou aucune perte.
