La pigmentación cutánea está originada por la combinación de cuatro pigmentos localizados en la dermis y epidermis: a) hemoglobina oxigenada de arteriolas y capilares, b) hemoglobina desoxigenada de vénulas, c) depósitos de carotenos o bilis no metabolizada, así como en otros pigmentos exógenos (medicamentos, metales, etc.) y d) melanina epidérmica.
