Quand les vents sont parallèles à la plus grande distance d'un lac qui ne gèle pas en entier en hiver, l'air ramasse de l'humidité sur le lac, se forme en neige et tombe sur la terre ferme toujours au même endroit, sur la même distance. Il faut que les conditions atmosphériques soient précisément favorables à ce phénomène. Ce renseignement a été fourni par un météorologue du ministère de l'Environnement.
