Respecto de la paternidad, aparece, junto con el varón que genéticamente es el padre por ser quien aportó los gametos masculinos para la concepción, otra figura que es el padre social, es decir, aquel que desea asumir todas las responsabilidades respecto de la paternidad; éste puede ser el marido o concubino de la madre o simplemente un varón soltero que desea tener hijos solicitando los "servicios" de una mujer que acepte aportar los gametos femeninos y llevar a cabo el embarazo para, después, entregar el hijo o hija a dicho varón.
