L'activité solaire est faite du cycle de 11 ans, auquel s'ajoutent de nombreuses variations rapides, telles les éruptions solaires. Au cours d'une éruption, un flux très intense de particules est émis en très peu de temps. Lorsqu'il atteint la Terre, il produit de belles aurores, et perturbe les communications radioélectriques. Ces particules constituent le rayonnement cosmique solaire.

Subatomic high-energy particles emitted by the Sun.

Solar flares strongly affect the atomic particles leaving the Sun. The "blast wave" propagates through the solar wind at 1500 km sec -1, disturbing the solar wind flow at the Earth. Protons, electrons and atomic nuclei are accelerated to high energies in flares - we call these solar cosmic rays.

Les éruptions solaires sont de violents cataclysmes intéressants une petite partie de la surface. Des particules peuvent être éjectées à des vitesses relativistes de l'ordre de 30,000 km/s, constituant les rayons cosmiques solaires. Leur temps de transit Soleil-Terre est de quelques dizaines de minutes, et elles peuvent perturber les hautes couches de l'atmosphère.

Comme les rayons cosmiques solaires pourraient constituer un danger non négligeable pour l'homme dans l'espace, la surveillance du Soleil et la prévision de son activité, singulièrement des éruptions à protons, revêt une importance pratique dans la préparation et l'exécution des vols spatiaux.
