Certains auteurs considèrent que le terme coup de soleil désigne un érythème solaire (sans inflammation, avec seulement une rougeur) et qu'il n'est pas synonyme de dermatite solaire; cependant, comme la terminologie médicale hésite sur le sens qu'on doit donner à ce dernier terme, d'autres auteurs les considèrent plutôt comme des synonymes.
