Ion implantation has by this time become an established technique for the manufacture of semiconductor devices in silicon. ... However, the field of ion implantation in silicon films on insulating substrates has not been so carefully researched. The annealing behaviour of boron and phosphorus ions implanted in silicon on sapphire (SOS) has been investigated by Eklund, Holmén and Peterstrom ..., who found that the sheet resistivity of implanted layers in 1-2 [ohm-centimeter] SOS and bulk silicon is almost the same.

Dans un système de télévision par câble à porteuses cohérentes incrémentales ("incremental coherent carrier system"), toutes les porteuses des différents canaux (35 en tout) proviennent d'un même oscillateur fonctionnant à 6 MHz. Le signal de cet oscillateur passe dans un générateur d'harmoniques puis dans un certain nombre (max. 35) de circuits qui extraient l'harmonique désirée (à partir de 54 MHz) et y ajoute 1,25 MHz. Le système cohérent à sources multiples fonctionne de la même façon, sauf que, dans le cas d'un nombre maximal de 3 canaux on ne se sert pas des harmoniques de l'oscillateur à 6MHz mais d'un oscillateur dont la phase est asservie à celle de la fréquence vision du signal TV capté par l'antenne. On a donc un système qui est presque complètement cohérent mais qui comporte plus d'un oscillateur [...]

Advantages include minimizing of parasitic capacitances, low leakage, and higher operating speed. Used in large-scale integration.

In integrated circuit applications, silicon-on-sapphire technology makes it possible to achieve higher speed operations through the virtual elimination of all parasitic junction and interconnection capacitance to substrate.
