Les mesures en laboratoire de la perte de transmission de son sont effectuées par bandes de tiers d'octave de 125 à 4 000 Hz. Cependant, il est commode de comparer les ensembles de construction à l'aide d'un seul nombre. La désignation la plus couramment utilisée en Amérique du Nord est l'indice de transmission du son (ITS). Cet indice est obtenu en comparant la courbe des pertes de transmission mesurée d'un ensemble à des courbes ITS de référence. Seule une partie limitée de la courbe des pertes de transmission est autorisée à descendre au-dessous de la courbe des indices de transmission du son.
