L'apprentissage de ce modèle [statistique] consiste à calculer les probabilités de transition entre tous les états du modèle. Cet apprentissage, relativement lourd à mettre en œuvre et coûteux en temps de calcul, se fait au préalable sur les prononciations par un très grand nombre de locuteurs (plusieurs centaines) de tous les mots du vocabulaire dans les conditions d'utilisation. On prend ainsi en considération les variabilités interlocuteurs et les variabilités dues aux canaux acoustiques et électriques.
