Any aggregate of individuals that on the basis of one or more shared concern or wants, makes claim upon other groups in society or upon society in general in order to maintain or promote its position or objectives.

OBS

Although "pressure group" and "interest group" are used interchangeably by some authors, they are not exactly the same concept. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1980, a pressure group is "any interest group that is not part of the government and does not itself seek to govern the country in its own name, but does seek to influence that government for its own purposes."

Association plus ou moins volontaire d'individus constituant un public, ayant des dispositions semblables relativement stables, en vue de promouvoir ou de défendre de façon permanente, temporaire ou intermittente, un ou des objets collectifs, immédiats ou communs, perçus par eux comme conformes à leurs besoins et aspirations propres, orientés d'une manière plus ou moins exclusive ou constante vers le système politique mais existant indépendamment de ce dernier, et qui suscite chez eux des impressions similaires tout en les disposant à faire pression auprès des centres de décisions politiques par des moyens jugés adéquats, sans toutefois les inciter à viser à la conquête du pouvoir.

groupe d'intérêts et groupe de pression sont considérés comme des synonymes par certains auteurs, notamment par Joseph Sumpf et Michel Hugues, dans le «Dictionnaire de sociologie», 1979, p. 142. Cependant, à la différence du groupe d'intérêts, le groupe de pression cherche à influencer les pouvoirs publics et l'opinion pour en retirer certains avantages (dans le sens du terme anglais «lobby»), et il ne faut pas les confondre.
