A state of the United States of America, [on a] chain of [20] volcanic and coral islands in north central Pacific Ocean, comprising eight major and 114 minor islands; admitted to [the] Union [in] 1959 as [the] 50th state, including [the] entire chain except Midway [Islands (Eastern Island and Sand Island) parts of a low coral atoll at the northwest end of the archipelago but also belonging to the United States since 1867].
