L'adresse IP correspond à un «numéro d'immeuble» distinct pour chaque ordinateur dans un réseau, par ex. 192.23.5.87. Les ordinateurs qui sont connectés en permanence à Internet, surtout les serveurs, ont toujours la même adresse IP «statique». Tous les ordinateurs qui ne sont pas constamment en ligne se voient en revanche affectés par le fournisseur d'accès une adresse IP non utilisée momentanément lors de l'entrée en communication «dynamique». Ceci permet d'économiser des adresses dont le nombre est limité.
