La phase de mise à poste débute lorsque le satellite est séparé du lanceur; elle prend fin au moment où le satellite est positionné sur son orbite. C'est à cet instant que débute le maintien à poste, phase qui consiste à maintenir le satellite sur sa position orbitale. Elle consiste à corriger les perturbations subies par l'orbite (attraction de la Terre, du Soleil, pression de radiation solaire ...) et à maintenir opérationnels les sous-systèmes du satellite.
