Les principaux apports de SO4 -- viennent de l'atmosphère (influence de la mer et de la pollution) et du lessivage des sols (gypse, pyrite...). L'apport des sols est beaucoup plus grand dans les bassins où la perméabilité et la nature géologique des couches de surface favorise l'oxydation des sulfures (pyrite ou composés de sulfate).
