[A] part of the equipment of all marine, locomotive, and large stationary boilers. They consist of a nest of boiler tubes supplied with steam from the steam drum. Radiant superheaters are those placed in sight of the fire, and convection superheaters are in the path of combustion gases exiting from the furnace.

Les surchauffeurs peuvent être à rayonnement ou à convection. En général, le premier étage du surchauffeur (surchauffeur à basse température) consiste en un faisceau tubulaire composé de serpentins parallèles à pas relativement étroit, réchauffé par la convection des gaz ayant déjà cédé une partie de leur contenu thermique aux faisceaux vaporisateurs et au surchauffeur final (surchauffeur à haute température).
