Svan is part of the Kartvelian or South Caucasian language family. It is the unwritten language spoken in the high valleys south of Mt. Elbrus in the Caucasus. It is spoken by the Kartvelian or Georgian peoples of the Caucasus dwelling on the upper course of the Ingur river.

Le svane fait partie de la famille caucasienne du sud (dite aussi kartvélien). C'est la langue orale (et non écrite) parlée dans les hautes vallées au sud du mont Elbrous dans les Caucases. Elle est parlée par les Karvélia ou Géorgiens des Caucases habitant près du cours supérieur du fleuve Ingouri.
