Svan is part of the Kartvelian or South Caucasian language family. It is the unwritten language spoken in the high valleys south of Mt. Elbrus in the Caucasus. It is spoken by the Kartvelian or Georgian peoples of the Caucasus dwelling on the upper course of the Ingur river.
