Le titre infectieux d'une préparation se mesure en observant le nombre de sujets malades en fonction des dilutions successives de l'échantillon. Il se calcule à partir de la dose létale 50% (DL50) c'est-à-dire la dose qui ne tue que 50% des sujets.
