On avait déjà réussi à faire des matières plastiques avec des amidons riches en amylose. Le résultat était décevant : la matière était opaque et difficile à traiter. Mais les laboratoires Hayashibara ont utilisé une nouvelle souche, Pullularia pullulans, qui, cultivée sur de l'amidon, forme un triglucopolysaccharide. Comprimé, chauffé et traité en vapeur humide, il donne un matériau plastique ayant les propriétés des plastiques actuels.
