TWO-STREAM INSTABILITY [2 records]

Record 1 2004-03-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Physics
DEF

An instability which can develop when a stream of particles of one type has a velocity distribution with its peak well separated from that of another type of particle through which it is flowing.

CONT

Electrical currents in the plasma provide the simplest and most common way to get structures. The irregularities are then said to result from a two-stream instability. ... Sometimes the currents are not strong enough to destabilize the plasma by themselves, and we must add density gradient densities to the picture. In that case we are dealing with a gradient-drift instability.

Domaine(s)
  • Physique spatiale
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Energy Transformation
  • Thermonuclear fusion
  • Atomic Physics
DEF

Instability which can develop when the velocity distribution of the plasma has two well-separated peaks.

OBS

A stream of high-energy electrons passing through a cold plasma can excite ion waves which will grow rapidly in magnitude at the expense of the kinetic energy of electrons.

OBS

two-stream instability: term and definition standardized by ISO.

  • Transformation de l'énergie

  • Physique atomique
DEF
