Il existe un protocole nommé VTP qui permet l'échange de messages de niveau de liens sur la cohérence des configurations VLAN [réseau local virtuel] au sein d'un seul domaine d'administration. Son intérêt est d'éviter de recopier sur dix commutateurs différents la même configuration des VLAN du réseau, et évite ainsi les travaux inutiles, les modifications fastidieuses, et le risque d'erreur. Toutes les cinq minutes, ou dès qu'un changement intervient dans des configurations VLAN, le protocole VTP diffuse sur le réseau des messages d'annonce, qui comportent outre un numéro de révision de configuration, les noms et les identifiants des VLAN, ainsi que les ports des commutateurs qui sont associés à chaque VLAN.
